Drug: Dilantin

phenytoin sodium (prompt) (pronounced FEN-uh-toyn SOH-dee-um)

 
Common Side Effects: incoordination, slurred speech, involuntary rapid movement of the eyes, double vision, inflamed gums (especially in children), nausea, vomiting, abnormal body hair growth.
 
Less Common Side Effects: dizziness, problems sleeping, nervousness, twitching, headache, mental confusion, decreased coordination, constipation, anemia, rash, rash with blisters, other skin irritation, skin sensitivity to light, pain, discoloration of the skin, swollen lymph nodes, high glucose level, decreased calcification of bone.
 
Missed Dose: If your dosing schedule is once per day, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If you don't remember the missed dose until the next day, skip it and resume your regular schedule. Don't double the dose.

If your dosing schedule is more than once per day, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it's within 4 hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Don't double the dose. If you miss doses for 2 or more days in a row, check with your health care provider.

  • disulfiram (Antabuse)
  • folic acid
  • hormonal contraceptives
  • isoniazid
  • quinidine
  • rifampin
  • salicylates (such as aspirin)
  • theophylline
  • valproic acid derivatives (such as Depacon, Depakene, and Depakote).
