Drug: amitriptyline

amitriptyline hydrochloride (pronounced ah-mee-TRIP-tuh-lin high-droh-KLOR-ighd)

 
Common Side Effects: low blood pressure (faint or dizzy feeling when getting up), fast heart rate or other electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, blurred vision, dry mouth, excessive sweating.
 
Less Common Side Effects: hallucinations, delusions, disorientation, incoordination, tremor, inflammation of nerves in arms and legs, anxiety, trouble sleeping, restlessness, drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, headache, involuntary movement or changes in muscle tone, slow heart rate, high blood pressure, ringing in ears, pupil dilation, increased pressure in eye, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, extreme slowdown of digestion, urine retention, rash, hives, skin sensitivity to light, swelling.

Note: After abrupt withdrawal of long-term therapy, you may experience nausea, headache, or extreme tiredness. These effects don't indicate that you're addicted to the medication.

 
Missed Dose: If your schedule is one dose a day at bedtime, don't take the missed dose in the morning because it may cause disturbing side effects during waking hours. Instead, check with your health care provider. If your dosing schedule is more than once a day, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Don't double the dose. If you have any questions, check with your health care provider.
 
Drug Interactions: Combining certain medications may alter their actions or produce unwanted effects. Tell your health care provider about other prescription medications, nonprescription medications, herbs, and supplements you're taking, especially:
  • barbiturates and other medications that suppress the central nervous system
  • cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • clonidine
  • epinephrine
  • fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem)
  • fluvoxamine (Luvox)
  • hormonal contraceptives
  • MAO inhibitors (antidepressants)
  • norepinephrine
  • paroxetine (Paxil)
  • sertraline (Zoloft).
